As a Wichita wedding photographer, I often get asked by couples how to choose a wedding photographer. What should you look for when you choose a wedding photographer for your big day? Of course, each couple has their own preferences and priorities, but there are a few key factors to consider when choosing a wedding photographer. If you are engaged and looking for the perfect wedding photographer, here are three things to look for:

Photography Style

First, an engaged couple should look for a photographer whose style matches their vision for their photos. Each couple has a unique style, so it is important to find a photographer whose aesthetic matches yours. A photographer’s style greatly impacts how your wedding photos look and feel.

How can you make sure your photographer’s style aligns with your vision? First, define your personal style and the style of your wedding. For example, if your wedding will take place in a classic wedding venue, like a banquet hall, you are likely going for a classic, romantic look. The best photographer for you would be someone who specializes in traditional photography and incorporates posed portraits and a timeless aesthetic. But if your style is more laid-back and bohemian, you might want to consider a candid, documentary-style photographer.

At the end of the day, your style and personal preferences make your wedding day unique. I hope you find a photographer who will accurately and genuinely document your best moments on your best day! To do that, look at a photographer’s portfolio and chat about their style before deciding if they are the one for you.

Experience Level

The second thing a couple should consider is the experience level of a photographer. A photographer’s experience is crucial because it will impact the quality of their work and how they handle unexpected situations on your wedding day. While there is nothing wrong with working with a newer photographer, it is essential to make sure your photographer is well-equipped and can take great photos in a wedding-day environment. An experienced photographer has a solid plan for if things go wrong on a wedding day. They’ve likely worked in various venues and understand lighting and composition well. If your venue has a challenging lighting situation, an experienced photographer will provide solutions.

No matter how much experience your photographer has, there are a few things you should make sure of before working with them. First, make sure they are insured. And second, ask if they have a backup plan in case of an emergency or equipment failure.

Choosing a wedding photographer with a good track record and a good level of experience will provide you peace of mind knowing your wedding photos will turn out as you envision them! Don’t be afraid to ask each photographer you speak with how long they’ve been a photographer and for examples of full wedding galleries.

Personality

In addition to a photographer’s style and experience level, it is also important to consider their personality. Your wedding photographer will be there for almost all the most emotional and important moments on your wedding day. Therefore, you must get along well with your photographer and feel comfortable with them. A photographer with the right personality can help put you and your partner at ease in front of the camera. Another key factor is how they interact with your bridal party and family members! Certain photographers have the right personality to keep everyone engaged for portraits.

I have found that getting along well with my couples and their families makes the wedding day go much smoother. Being on the same page as your photographer can greatly impact your overall experience and your finished photos. Make sure you get to know your photographer and spend time with them before the wedding day, whether on a call or at your engagement session!

How to Choose Your Wedding Photographer

I truly hope these tips help you as you search for your dream wedding photographer! After all, you’ve found the one you want to spend the rest of your life with, and now you just need to find the one who will best document your big day. First, get to know the photographers you are interested in so you can make sure they are a good fit. Ask them about their style and level of experience, and get to know them as a person. If possible, book your engagement session with the same photographer so you can become more familiar with them. Considering all these factors, you can find a photographer that will produce beautiful photos of your incredible day!
