Wedding trends are dynamic and ever-evolving. New styles gain popularity, old trends pick back up, and priorities change. What practices are shaping weddings in 2024? And how will this year change the future of weddings forever? Let’s dive into some important ways weddings are changing this year and beyond:

Typical Wedding Size in 2024

Micro weddings and elopements are no longer just a pandemic necessity; they are an intentional choice made by more and more couples. While big weddings will never go away, simpler, smaller weddings are becoming more desirable this year. Couples love creating an intimate vibe and celebrating with their closest friends and loved ones. Plus the cost savings make intimate celebrations a more attractive option (especially with rising costs—we will get more in depth on that later in the article). The added flexibility, comfortable vibe, and savings have made smaller weddings more common this year.

The average wedding size in 2024 is decreasing as more couples opt for simpler ceremonies, like this lawn ceremony.

Focus On Technology and Content

As technology changes, so does the wedding industry! Some exciting developments we’re seeing in 2024 include digital wedding planning tools. Websites and apps to help you plan your wedding are more advanced than ever. Plus, there are fun new apps that allow guests to get involved on the wedding day. Live-streaming ceremonies has also remained a popular option for couples since we saw a massive shift to this during the pandemic. It’s a great way to have more people involved without having a large in-person guest count. The content of a wedding day is also more important to 2024 couples. Many hire content creators to deliver phone photos and videos of their wedding day in addition to their professional photo and video team.

2024 Wedding Budgets

Weddings are expensive—there’s no way around it. Each year, The Knot does a study on wedding trends. And this year the average cost of a wedding has risen to $35,000, $5,000 higher than the year before. This is due in large part to inflation and rising costs. What does that mean for your average wedding? Vendors, food, and services cost more, contributing to the rise of smaller weddings and nontraditional practices. Couples are choosing their vendors more carefully and doing more price shopping. And some couples are even forgoing certain services to save on costs.

2024 Weddings Are Fun

Another major trend in 2024 is fun weddings! Couples are choosing unique wedding experiences that reflect their likes and personalities. Instead of having a cookie-cutter wedding with all of the typical traditions, couples are going outside the box. In 2024, you can expect to see everything from themed weddings to nontraditional venues to personalized ceremonies. This was something important to me at my own wedding! We were very selective and intentional on our wedding day. We chose to have a close friend officiate our wedding. We even had ice cream instead of wedding cake! And we added extra time to be together into our timeline. It wasn’t the most traditional wedding day, but we had so much fun celebrating together with our guests. Unconventional choices based on your personal preferences make your wedding day fun!

Sustainability & Accountability

Sustainability and accountability are in this year. There is a growing emphasis in the wedding community on sustainable, environmentally friendly practices. In recent years, more couples and vendors are choosing eco-conscious decor and food and beverage options. Some ways couples do this is by selecting eco-friendly plates, cups, and utensils instead of single-use options that generate a lot of waste. Venues and vendors are also finding more ways to be sustainable. There are more sustainable options available for wedding gowns and other wedding attire. These practices help make weddings better by doing less harm to the environment. By holding each other accountable, vendors have truly stepped up to provide a better, more sustainable experience.

Representation in 2024 Weddings

Lastly, 2024 has brought an increased emphasis on inclusivity and representation in weddings and the wedding industry. Couples are more diverse than ever and want to see the representation of love stories like theirs. They are also eager to showcase cultural traditions on their wedding day. This creates unique wedding practices that blend cultures and traditions into something unique and beautiful. There has also been an increased focus on more inclusive sizing in the industry so brides and grooms of all shapes and sizes can look and feel their best on their wedding day.

2024 couples are choosing ways to incorporate more of their culture into their wedding day, like including a tea ceremony

We love to see and celebrate unique love stories at Lively Photography. 2024 has already seen a huge shift in trends from years past. Couples are focusing on what is truly important to them instead of having a cookie-cutter wedding. Vendors are adapting to new demands in the industry to celebrate love in a personalized way, incorporating cultural traditions. If you are getting married this year, or in the upcoming years, I hope you have the best day ever! Our team would love to be there to photograph all of the beautiful moments on your wedding day.
