Your engagement photo session is an exciting milestone in your story! You’ve probably picked out your venue, photographer, and maybe even your dress. Some of the big wedding decisions are made, and you get to enjoy your last few months of being engaged. The time goes by fast, and taking engagement photos is a great way to celebrate this unique era in your life. It’s time to celebrate! But if you are coming up on your engagement photo session, you might have a  few questions, like what you should wear and how you can prepare for your session.

Preparing for Engagement Photos

It can be a little intimidating having your photo taken, especially if you haven’t taken professional photos in a long time (or ever)! So how can you make sure you look nice in front of the camera and feel confident and prepared for your engagement session? Here are some helpful tips for choosing what to wear to your engagement session from a wedding and engagement photographer:

What Outfits Should You Wear?

Dress for the season.

The perfect outfits for your engagement session depend on the season and location of your shoot! A gorgeous flowy sleeveless dress might look great on the beach in the summer, but it probably won’t be the most comfortable in a wintry wonderland session. Dressing for the season will help you look great and feel great during your session! Spring is the perfect time to break out pastel colors. A lightweight outfit that has flowy movement might be your best option if you plan a summer engagement session. In the fall, boots, jackets, and hats can add dimension to your photos! And if you plan on braving the cold winter weather for an outdoor photoshoot, make sure you have a solid base layer and coat you can wear to warm up in between photos.

Choose one partner’s outfit first and coordinate your outfits.

Instead of choosing your outfits separately and then trying to make them work, one of you should choose your outfit first. Then the other partner can work with the first person’s style and colors. As the second person chooses their outfit, try coordinating instead of matching! Choose colors and textures that look good together instead of wearing the same thing. The contrast will help you each stand out in your engagement photos and look great.

If you’re wearing a pattern, make sure it’s not distracting.

Most patterns look good in photos, but some just don’t show up well. Also, smaller patterns can create a weird effect in photos, so avoid wearing patterns that are smaller than a dime or are overwhelming.

Accessorize, but lose the ball cap for your photos.

Accessories can make an outfit complete! There are many options for accessories that will let your personal style shine. Depending on the weather and location, you could accessorize with jewelry, a scarf, a hat, or even a shawl. I know a lot of guys love keeping their hats on, but a ball cap creates shadows on the face and isn’t ideal for engagement photos. If you have a cap that has special meaning, you can always request to take a few photos with it on but leave it off for most of the engagement session.

Make sure your outfit makes you feel comfortable and confident.

At the end of the day, the most important thing to consider when you choose your engagement session outfits is what will make you feel comfortable and confident. What colors do you love on yourself? Are there any pieces that make you feel great about how you look? Wear something that doesn’t irritate you or dig into your skin. Make sure you can move around and feel natural in what you wear! Choosing outfits that make you feel comfortable and confident will ensure that you’ll enjoy your session and love your photos for years to come.

More Tips for Your Engagement Session

Be on time.

The sun is only up for so long, especially in the fall! So make sure you show up on time for your photos so you can enjoy the full length of your session without being stressed about getting all the images you want before it’s dark out.

Clean your ring.

Your engagement session won’t be complete without a few detail ring shots! Gently clean your ring with a soft toothbrush and dish soap before your photo session so it’s nice and sparkly for your photos!

Empty your pockets.

During your session, keep your pockets empty of everything, even your phone! Your outfit will sit better on your body, and you won’t have any weird bumps that stick out like an eyesore in your photos.

Trust your photographer and relax!

Your photographer will guide you through the process, so trust their advice and feel free to ask them any questions! Then, focus on the exciting milestone you’re celebrating and let your photographer do the rest.
